The 2022 Film on the Rocks series will feature a slightly shorter-than-average lineup even as it returns to its rightful place inside the Red Rocks Amphitheater, organizers announced this week.
The 23rd edition of the series, presented by Denver Film and amphitheater owner Denver Arts & Venues, includes a total of five films, with live performance details to be announced at a later date. All screenings will take place inside Red Rocks for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, doing away with the drive-in model of the past two years.
The truncated 2022 schedule begins and ends on audience-pleasing sci-fi notes, beginning June 13 with the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster “Thor: Ragnarok” and ending August 15 with the Oscar-winning epic “Dune.” by director Denis Villeneuve. (See the full lineup below.) Tickets are $16 for general admission and $32 for VIP seating. They go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, May 20 at denverfilm.org.
“We are extremely grateful to our audience who have fully embraced the drive-in concept for Film on the Rocks over these past two seasons,” Denver Film CEO Kevin Smith said in a press release. “However, there is nothing more special than the amphitheater experience that Red Rocks offers….”
Pre-pandemic releases of Film on the Rocks typically offered at least a few more titles than in 2022. However, the COVID-forced adaptations of 2020 and 2021 allowed Denver Film to increase its average by hosting up to four screenings per month in the world famous venue. parking lot and, starting last year, even adding Christmas movies.
But wouldn’t you rather see a movie entirely in the amphitheater (the answer is yes) rather than in its parking lot? (Always yes.) So are we.
Doors to each show open at 6:30 p.m. with musical guests on stage at 7 p.m., followed by the movie at 8:30 p.m., organizers said. The artists will be announced in the coming weeks.
