Bay Street Theater, the nonprofit professional theater and community cultural center in Sag Harbor, New York, plans to open its first purpose-built home later this year and be completed by 2023.
Roger Ferris + Partners will design the venue, while Charcoalblue will design the theatrical elements. The project will be built on a site at the entrance to Sag Harbor that works seamlessly with the John Steinbeck Waterfront Park, transforming a strip mall into a community resource.
The center will include a main theater with additional fixed and flexible spaces, including a space dedicated to the organization’s educational programs for children and adults throughout the year, a center for the development of new works, a boutique and storage of sets, special events and professional development initiatives. .
The non-profit organization Friends of Bay Street Theatre, led by Adam Potter, was created to oversee the development of the site, including land acquisition, financing, fundraising and design.
General Manager Tracy Mitchell said, “This has been a lifelong dream for the founders of Bay Street Theater and myself as current General Manager. It will not only provide the space for creative growth, but secure the future and legacy of Bay Street with a permanent home.
Artistic Director Scott Schwartz added, “I know this beautiful new facility will allow Bay Street to continue the exciting artistic growth we have experienced over the past few years. This will make the company an even more versatile home for an ever-growing family of new and established voices in theater and allow us to offer expanded educational programming for children and adults in our community. We couldn’t be more excited.
