Advocates from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), partner organizations that are part of the “Vaccinate Our World” (VOW) campaign, staged a protest and a “die” street theater outside the global headquarters of the vaccine maker COVID -19 Moderna on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 in Cambridge, Mass. Another “die in” street theater event takes place on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18 at noon ET. The protests are part of two weeks of daily weekday action targeting Moderna in Cambridge. Lawyers accuse Moderna and its CEO Stéphane Bancel – who earned $ 59 million on the company’s 2019 IPO and a salary of $ 13 million last year – of “profiting from the pandemic” on its COVID-19 vaccine when a large part of the world’s population has not yet received a single dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 5 million people have died. Defenders are protesting against Moderna and its CEO, Stéphane Bancel, against the refusal of the biotechnology company to share its life-saving vaccine more equitably with those in need around the world. The groups renamed the company logo to “Murderna”.

In addition to the protests, a postcard mailer headlined “Did you know your neighbor is a greedy pandemic profiteer? “ will be mailed to residents in select zip codes in CEO Bancel’s Beacon Hill neighborhood and a cable and air TV commercial will air on CNN and MSNBC stations in the Boston area. According to Boston Globe, Moderna shares plunged two weeks ago after Wall Street reacted to news that its total vaccine sales will not be as gargantuan as expected: up to $ 5 billion less than initially forecast . Last month, a damning New York Times front page article ( Moderna, Racing for Profits, keeps Covid vaccine out of reach of the poor) traced Moderna’s meteoric monetary rise thanks to its COVID-19 vaccine: from total revenue of $ 60 million in 2019 to (a then expected) “$ 20 billion in revenue this year” That Morningstar Analyst Projected Could Include Company Profits On Vaccine “… up to $ 14 billion.”

The Guardian reported that Moderna “… billed the US government (which helped fund the development of the vaccine) up to $ 16.50 a dose, and sold it between $ 22 and $ 37 outside of the United States.” ( “COVID-19 vaccines: contracts, prices and benefits” The keeper, Julia Kollewe, 8/11/21). AstraZeneca, one of Moderna’s competitors, sells its vaccine for less than $ 5.00.

The New York Times quoted Dr Tom Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as saying “They (Moderna) behave as if they have absolutely no responsibility beyond maximizing ROI.” The newspaper also reports:

  • Of the handful of middle-income countries that have made deals to buy Moderna’s vaccines, most have yet to receive any doses, and at least three have had to pay more than the United States or the European Union, according to government officials from those countries. .
  • The United States too injected $ 1.3 billion for clinical trials and other research. And in August 2020, the government agreed to pre-order $ 1.5 billion worth of vaccine, ensuring Moderna would have a market for what was not a proven product.

“Our message to Moderna remains clear: greed TUE, and we simply will no longer tolerate pandemic profits,” said Tracy jones, Regional Director for the Midwest and National Director of Advocacy for AHF. “In low-income countries, only about 4% of people have been vaccinated, Africa being particularly affected. We will not allow pharmaceutical companies to keep life-saving treatments for millions of people by charging exorbitant prices for drugs often developed with the support of taxpayers. Modern must lower the prices of its vaccines, share its patents and technology with other countries, and be transparent about its trade relations with vaccines so that production can be increased across the world to truly tackle our global pandemic. We won’t stop until Moderna does the right thing!

Over the summer, the AHF carried out similar protests targeting Pfizer and Johnson & johnson at their respective headquarters as fellow blatant profiteers from the pandemic.

AIDS Health Foundation (AHF), the world’s largest AIDS organization, currently provides medical care and / or services to more than 1.6 million clients in 45 countries around the world in the United States, Africa, Latin America / Caribbean, Asia / Pacific region and Europe.
