A NEW outdoor performance space is taking shape in a small rural part of Evesham thanks to the support of District Council Leaders.
Work on a modern 250 seater amphitheater on the grounds of the Lenches Sports and Recreation Club is nearing completion.
The design makes innovative use of the natural landscape, transforming the gentle slope behind the club’s tennis courts into a curved, terraced seating area. The existing pavilion will also be expanded to include a changing room, green room, costume area and storage facility.
With stunning views across the Severn Valley and with Malvern, Abberley and Clent Hills as a backdrop, the venue opens up new opportunities for outdoor theatre, dance, music and sports performance.
The Lenches Sports and Recreation Club worked with the South Lenches Parish Council to realize their vision, with Wychavon supporting the project with a community grant of £95,000 in 2019.
Part of the case for its construction rested on improving access to the arts in rural communities, with several groups including the Greater Lenches Amateur Dramatic Society endorsing the project and confirming their desire to perform there.
The cricket club and other sports teams will also benefit from specially designed seats for spectators and more secure storage space for machinery, kits and equipment.
Construction of the amphitheater began in March 2020. After facing some disruption from weather and the pandemic, it is expected to be completed and open to the public this summer.
Councilor Rob Adams, executive board member of Stronger Communities, Culture and Sport, praised the impact of the grant scheme in another area of the district.
Club secretary Patrick Twist said: “There have been significant challenges over the last two years but it is a testament to the hard work of the project team and the local community that we have been able to overcome them. and soon we will be able to enjoy the finished amphitheater.
Chris Seabourne, Chairman of South Lenches Parish Council, said: “We are delighted with the new opportunities the amphitheater will bring to Lenches and the wider community.
“Sports teams, artists and spectators will all benefit greatly.”
