Since opening their Live Theater in 2012, production group California Regional Theater has been dedicated to creating great theater and educating students of all ages in the art of performance. The theater has made a name for itself by making large-scale professional theatrical productions of Broadway musicals.
CRT will open its second live theater, First Street Theater, September 17-26 with the powerful and emotional two-act musical, “The Last Five Years.” The theater, located at 139 West First Street, Chico, was once the location of the Blue Room Theater. CRT founder Bob Maness has passed the COVID-imposed hiatus from live theater, making this newly created first-street theater a theater that everyone enjoys.

The musical “The Last Five Years” is directed by Maness. Written by Jason Robert Brown, it premiered on Broadway and has been produced in the United States and abroad. The musical story tells the story of two New Yorkers who fall in love for five years. They are a rising novelist, Jamie, played by Austin Nunn, and a struggling young actress, Cathy, played by Megan Swartz.
Cathy tells her story backwards while Jamie tells her story chronologically. The two characters meet only once, during their wedding in full spectacle.
This show is beautifully highlighted with songs, “I’m Still Hurting”, “Goodbye Until Tomorrow” and musical styles such as pop, jazz, classical, Latin and others. It’s full of romance, wit, and storytelling.
