SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – What was once known as Sioux Empire Community Theater has got a new name and a new look. With the organization now deleveraged, the Premier Playhouse offers quality live theater in Sioux Falls.
You’ll find the Premier Playhouse at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Sioux Falls. In addition to the new offices, there are full-time employees.
âThe first day when I took over it was myself and an accountant,â said Robin Byrne.
Executive and artistic director Robin Byrne says he’s hired 6 full-time professional theater workers and half a dozen part-time workers. In addition to productions, the Premier Playhouse offers lessons. He says it will always be a community theater.
“So it’s a professional community-serving theater company that gives ordinary people in the community the opportunity to be on stage in professional productions directed by people who really know what they’re doing,” he said. Byrne said.
Premier bank is sponsoring the Playhouse for the next 4 years. Byrne says it allows them to pay people a bit more for their time.
âWe asked people to put in a lot of time and put in a lot of hours and effort into productions for pitiful pay,â Byrne said.
It also means that they can raise the level of performance in other ways.
âIt allows us to buy equipment that we beg to borrow and sometimes it’s not up to par. a small example of this is we used a fog machine for blood brothers who were inconsistent, so now for a Christmas carol we said we have the money, invest in better machines and make sure you that fog on the stage looks like fog, âByrne said.
The next show is A Christmas Carol, which they plan to make an annual tradition. They will also take productions on the road, with the intention of bringing performances of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps” to cities like Mitchell, Madison and Dell Rapids.
