With security concerns caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Temecula Old Town Community Theater and cabaret club The Merc have extended the cancellation of its performances until January 2021.
âThis decision follows advice from our city manager, the Riverside County public health official and the state governor. Our top priority is always to ensure the safety of our clients, volunteers and staff as the pandemic continues, âa theater newsletter said. âWe hope to bring cultural enrichment to our community again soon. “
The theater, which closed in March, initially postponed its reopening until the fall. However, security concerns related to COVID-19 have further delayed these plans.
âWe had informed people three months at a time, but ultimately thought we wouldn’t open this year,â said Beatriz Barnett, Temecula’s community services superintendent who oversees the town’s cultural events. âWe are using this different period of COVID shutdown and social distancing to make sure the theater is in tip top shape when we return. “
Pandemic closures will not prevent the community theater, open since 2005 in the heart of the old town, from promoting the arts.
Jazz at the Merc continues to host virtual jazz concerts on Thursdays.
The theater also moved its 15th anniversary celebration online, with a free live concert with Hawaiian singer Amy HÄnaiali’i on Sunday, October 4.
Registration has also started for middle and high school students interested in arts education. Students can audition for an upcoming production of “James and the Giant Peach” by Roald Dahl, scheduled for February 2021, as part of the city’s internship program for those interested in acting, behind the scenes and professional mentoring.
âWe want to continue to provide entertainment. It’s difficult, as a patron of the arts, âBarnett said. âBut we still manage to do things online and give our customers free experiences and shows, (which are) normally paid events. We give our community a gift by being there for them.
Customers can continue to check the Temecula website, social media, and the Temecula Theater Foundation website for updates on the activities and the reopening.
